Auburndale, Lake Region Clinch Playoff Spots

EAGLE LAKE | Polk County added two more football teams that are playoff bound Monday night. Auburndale's Bloodhounds posted two victories in a Class 4A-District 12 shootout, beating Groveland South Lake, 8-0, and then edging Lake Region, 7-6, to win the district championship outright and in the process gain a home field berth in the regional quarterfinals against Hillsborough High.

Lake Region bounced back from the setback against the Bloodhounds to defeat South Lake, 14-0, thus earning the runner-up playoff position and earning a trip to Armwood in the first round of the playoffs.

Keeshawn Maxwell, a sophomore fullback, was the major weapon for Auburndale in the first 12-minute session, gaining 60 yards on 10 carries and scoring a touchdown on a 10-yard sweep to the right. Auburndale missed the extra point, but got two insurance points when the Bloodhounds swarmed South Lake running back Jeff Demps in the end zone for a safety.

That first session was a wild one, featuring five fumbles, a pair of interceptions and a South Lake touchdown by Demps nullified by an illegal shift penalty.

"The key to Keeshawn is the guys in front of him doing the blocking," said Auburndale coach Pat Dooley. "They all did a great job.

"We treated this just like a regular game with a long practice."

Auburndale stayed mostly on the ground in the two sessions but was successful on a 55-yard pass play from quarterback Demarcus Davis to Jemial Crawford that put the Hounds ahead of Lake Region.

Ricardo Singh's extra point kick turned out to be the difference. Lake Region scored with 3:16 remaining on a 10-yard run by Marcus Robinson, but the center snap on the extra point was mishandled and the Thunder missed the extra point.

In the third session to determine the runner-up, South Lake took the kickoff and marched 75 yards to the 1-yard line, but a third-down attempt was fumbled and recovered in the end zone by Lake Region for a touchback.

The Thunder went 80 yards for their first touchdown with quarterback Matt Hopkins going 30 yards on a keeper. Robinson got the second touchdown with 2:07 left on a counter play from 34 yards out.

"This is a hugh boost for our program," said Lake Region coach Steve Reynolds.

Auburndale plays Haines City on Friday night while Lake Region faces Bartow. Both contests end the regular season.

The regional quarterfinals between Auburndale and Hillsborough and Lake Region and Armwood will be played Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
