AHS donates items to city

On Monday, August 21, Mr. Jake White met with City of Auburndale representative, Parks and Recreation Director Cody McGhee.  The purpose was to donate artifacts from the white cornerstone that is set in Auburndale High School’s front office.  Some background:

In 1915, the original school in Auburndale was built on the site of what is now Stambaugh Middle School.  The Auburndale Women’s Club set the cornerstone in a ceremony on September 8, 1915.  This school would stand until its destruction following a tornado in May, 1979.  At that time the cornerstone was removed and brought to the Auburndale Public Library.  Its contents were inventoried and it stayed at the library for 8 years until 1987 when the administration building at AHS was completed, at which time it was set in the wall near the front door.  Some items from the stone were removed at this time and others were added.  The items that had been removed were recently discovered at AHS and were dedicated to the City of Auburndale to be displayed at the Historic Museum at the Parks and Recreation office downtown on West Park Street.
